Occupy, take over. But what then?

Students of the University of Zagreb (Croatia) will present their struggle and actions. Croatian students have been fighting since 2008 for free publicly financed higher education on all levels . During this struggle they have organized two large scale occupations in more than twenty faculties and universities, many protest actions and other activities. We will be showing films and have an open discussion:

• How were these occupations organized?
• What were their goals?
• Why did they decide to organise in a direct democratic way without leaders?

We have invited two Croatian guest speaker from this movement to tell us more.

This Croatian student organisation is based on non-hierarchical and direct democratic organisation. The students’ actions are not just concerned with higher education, they also support workers’ strikes and protests and try to spread ideas of direct democracy and self-management in all sectors of society. They have become one of the principle opponents of neoliberalism in Croatia as well as one of the leading forces for social change.

Maandag 1 november 19:30: Films en Discussie in Utrecht- lessen van de universiteitsbezettingen in Zagreb

Bezetten, overrompelen. Maar wat dan?

Studenten van de Universiteit van Zagreb (Kroatië) zullen hun strijd en acties presenteren. Kroatische studenten zijn sinds 2008 in gevecht geweest voor vrij publiek hoger onderwijs op alle niveaus. Gedurende deze strijd hebben ze twee grootschalige bezettingen georganiseerd in meer dan twintig faculteiten en universiteiten, en vele andere activiteiten en acties. Wij zullen films vertonen en een open discussie houden:

• hoe werden deze bezettingen georganiseerd?
• Wat waren de doelen?
• Waarom besloten ze zich te organiseren in de vorm van directe democratische manier zonder leiders?

Wij hebben twee Kroatische gastsprekers van deze beweging uitgenodigd om meer te vertellen.

Deze Kroatische studentenbeweging is gebaseerd op niet-hiërarchische en directe democratische organisatie, De studentenacties zijn niet alleen uit zorg over hoger onderwijs, ze steunen ook arbeidersstakingen en protesten en proberen ideeën te verspreiden over directe democratie en zelfbeheer in alle delen van de maatschappij. Ze zijn een van de belangrijkste opponenten van neoliberalisme in Kroatië geworden, evenals een van de sterkste krachten voor sociale verandering.
