Op dinsdag 8 april presenteert de Antifascistische Actie (AFA) Den Haag een filmscreening van de documentaire ‘Into the Fire’. Na de film zullen twee mensen van ReINORM (een politieke groep van in Nederland wonende Grieken) een discussie over fascisme en de situatie van vluchtelingen in Griekenland leiden.

Into the Fire is een heftige documentaire over de situatie van vluchtelingen en migranten in het door bezuinigingen hard geraakte Athene. De film is met medeleven en gevoel voor de situatie geproduceerd, maar het resultaat is niet zachtzinnig – met enkele schokkende passages. De documentaire komt voort uit crowdfunding, toewijding, opoffering en een brandend gevoel voor gerechtigheid.

In tijden van ernstige bezuinigingen ziet het er somber uit voor de Griekse bevolking, maar het is nog veel erger voor diegenen die onlangs in Griekenland zijn aangekomen. Zonder onderdak, wettige documenten of ondersteuning, worden vluchtelingen en migranten in Griekenland geconfronteerd met toenemend en vaak gewelddadig racisme door de groeiende nazipartij Gouden Dageraad en de politie in Athene. Velen zijn wanhopig en willen Griekenland verlaten, maar zitten gevangen in EU wet- en regelgeving en wetgeving van andere EU-landen, wat betekent dat ze zouden worden teruggestuurd naar Griekenland als ze erin zouden slagen om naar een andere EU lidstaat te gaan.

08-04-2014: Filmscreening: Into the Fire + discussion On Tuesday the 8th of April, Anti-Fascist Action (AFA) The Hague presents a filmscreening of the documentary ‘Into the Fire’. After the movie two people of ReINFORM (political group of Greeks living in the Netherlands) will host a discussion on fascism and the situation of refugees in Greece.

• What can we do to support refugees in Greece?
• Are there similarities with the situation in the Netherlands?
• And how did the issue develop since the documentary was released?

Into the Fire is a hard hitting documentary which shows the plight of refugees and migrants in recession-hit Athens, Into The Fire is a film with a difference. Shot and edited with sensitivity and compassion, it doesn’t pull its punches and makes for harrowing viewing in parts. It is the product of crowd funding, dedication, self-sacrifice and a burning sense of justice.

In times of severe austerity things look bleak for Greek people, but they’re far worse for those who have recently arrived. Without housing, legal papers or support, migrants in Greece are faced with increasing and often violent racism at the hands of the growing Nazi party Golden Dawn and the police in Athens. Many are trapped by EU laws and legislation of other EU countries meaning they’d be returned to Greece if they managed to get to another member state, they are desperate to leave the country.
