Coming Thursday 28th of January, Mario Peñanco, youth leader of the federation of Coca farmers in Bolivia will share his opnion and experience.

The first indigenous president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, promised a radical end to the neoliberal politics of his predecessors, including the US led war on drugs. Ten years later socialism seems to be losing support in South America; see for example the current developments in Venezuela and the defeat of Maduro at the last elections.

According to Mario Peñanco, a coca farmer just like Evo Morales, the life of Bolivia’s farmers and indigenous peoples’ has not changed much and criticism regarding the lack of change is nipped in the bud by the leftist government of Morales.

Were we too optimistic regarding the leftist government of Morales?

Mario will express his experience and vision as Coca farmer coming Thursday 28th of January followed by an open discussion with the audience. The discussion night is at Casco, Lange Nieuwstraat 7 in Utrecht and starts at 19.30.

Graag heten we jullie allen van harte welkom aankomende donderdag 28 januari deel te nemen aan de discussieavond ‘Failed revolution(s)? A Bolivian coca farmer speaks out.’ De avond wordt geïntroduceerd door Mario Peñanco een jonge leider van de federatie van Cocaboeren in Bolivia.

De eerste inheemse president van Bolivia, Evo Morales, beloofde een radicale breuk met het neoliberalistische beleid van zijn voorgangers. Tien jaar later blijkt het socialisme aan steun te verliezen; zie onder meer het verlies van Maduro in Venezuela.

Volgens Mario Peñanco, een coca-boer net als Evo, is het leven van de boeren en de inheemse bevolking nog weinig veranderd in Bolivia en wordt kritiek over het gebrek aan verandering in de kiem gesmoord door de linkse regering van Morales.
